Sound Mixing 101

Sound Mixing 101

If your child has ever been interested in recording or mixing their own song, this is the class for them!  No experience is required and all sound files will be provided.

By using their creativity and some practical instruction, students will learn how to layer sound files and make them into a song.   After the song is created, they will learn how to apply digital effects to enhance the sound and produce a professional sounding song.  At the end of the week, students will have a unique, original song that they composed, mixed and produced!

Sample Schedule

Monday

10:00 – 11:00:   Sound Mixing 101
The first day we will talk about the what mixing and producing entails.  How engineers and producers can simply put together a song and eventually create unique sonic landscapes from individual music tracks.  Students will get an overview of how Digital Audio Workstations function and how effects can make or break a song.  We will also introduce our music track database which has pre-recorded tracks of drums, guitars, piano, bass and synthesizer.

Tuesday

10:00 – 11:00:   Sound Mixing 101

On Tuesday, we will work together and create the same song using the tracks provided.  Students will get an overview on how songs are constructed and on the basic layout of many hit songs.  After that we will dig into the database and work on the same song together.  By layering the tracks, adding the effects and having the sound and effect levels correct, a song will be created from a database of sounds.

Wednesday

10:00 – 11:00:   Sound Mixing 101

Wednesday is an opportunity for students to finish their first track and showcase their work.  We will listen to each creation and discuss what worked and how we can improve on our songs.  After that we will get to work on our songs from the music track database.  Teachers will work with each student to ensure they are headed in the right direction and in a position for success from the start.

Thursday

10:00 – 11:00:   Sound Mixing 101
Thursday will focus on song structure and how to add dynamics and drama to simple melody lines via effects and sound levels.  Students will be refining their overall song plan and start to work on adding effects to individual tracks and finally to the over all mix.

Friday

10:00 – 11:00:   Sound Mixing 101
Finally on Friday students will learn how to finish and master their track.  Adding the final elements that  create sparkle and air to tracks in order to make them shine.  Once we have all of our tracks completed, we will play them for the group, discuss the directions they took and learn a bit from each song.
